The event is scheduled for April 3-5. Olive’s petition suggests that its global audience could put the area in peril.
She writes: “Circuit of the Americas says on their website ‘Cheer with thousands of screaming fans in the Main Grandstand’. These fans from countries all across the world won’t be bringing just money with them. The risk of Corona Virus exposure is real!
Exposing the local Austin and Elroy community to a Pandemic Virus situation that’s currently escalating without a vaccine or cure available.”
So far, Olive’s petition hasn’t gained much traction; it had fewer than 100 signatures as of Saturday. But no one is arguing that the Coronavirus outbreak isn’t a threat that has already forced the cancelation of events worldwide.
MotoGP has already cancelled or postponed its opening races in Qatar and Thailand. The Chinese F1 Grand Prix has been postponed, and the Bahrain F1 race has halted ticket sales; Formula E has postponed its Rome event as well as the one in China; this weekend’s Fan Appreciation Day at the Suzuka track in Japan was cancelled.
